This annual honor celebrates the legacy of Roger Ellis Hedlund (July 18, 1959 – April 9, 2024) and recognizes individuals who have given extraordinary, yet often unsung, time to care for our community.

Roger exemplified selfless service, volunteering for many Grand County nonprofits for over 40 years. Roger dedicated himself to the enrichment and betterment of our community, not just through his entrepreneurial ventures, but through his relentless commitment to service and leadership.

Roger was always solution-oriented and committed to equality among Fraser Valley citizens. He lent his expertise and passion to numerous organizations including the Fraser Valley Metropolitan Recreation District, Grand County Search & Rescue, Grand Foundation, Headwaters Trails Alliance, Grand County Advocates, Grand County Pet Pals, Colorado Headwaters Land Trust, Grand Youth Adventures, and Grand Huts Association. He was also the visionary behind the Oslo Foundation, focusing on critical areas such as early childhood education and social justice, embodying his belief that active involvement is key to community growth. His legacy is one of boundless generosity, leadership, youth empowerment, outdoor education, and an unwavering belief in the power of community.

Each year, the Roger Ellis Hedlund Service Above Self Award will shine a light on these quiet heroes who embody Roger’s spirit of generosity and philanthropy. The recipient can direct a $1,000 award to a Grand County nonprofit organization of their choice, continuing the cycle of giving that Roger cherished.
